Introduction to Skin Cancer Screening & Early Detection

Regular skin cancer screenings are one of the most important steps you can take to protect your long-term skin health. Early detection allows for smaller, simpler treatments and can often prevent more extensive procedures later. At Lake Norman Plastic Surgery, Dr. Henry Wilson and his team perform thorough skin evaluations for patients in the Lake Norman region, including Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Denver, and the greater Charlotte area, to identify concerning lesions early and guide clear, proactive next steps.

What Is a Skin Cancer Screening?

A skin cancer screening is a detailed, head-to-toe evaluation that documents any moles, spots, growths, or areas that look irregular or have changed over time. The goal is early diagnosis—when conditions such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are most treatable and least likely to require extensive surgery.

What Happens During the Exam?

Your exam is performed in a private, comfortable setting. Dr. Wilson will carefully examine your skin, noting any lesions that appear unusual or warrant closer attention. Areas of concern are documented for monitoring. If a suspicious lesion is identified, a biopsy may be performed during the same visit. After the biopsy, you will receive clear instructions on the next steps, follow-up, and treatment options based on your results.

Who Should Be Screened?

Annual screenings are especially recommended for individuals in the greater Charlotte area who:

  • Have fair skin or freckles
  • Have a history of blistering sunburns
  • Use or previously used tanning beds
  • Have a family history of skin cancer
  • Notice new or changing moles, sores that don’t heal, or scaly spots that bleed

Anyone with a concerning lesion should schedule an exam promptly rather than waiting for an annual check.

What If a Skin Cancer or Atypical Mole Is Found?

If your biopsy reveals an atypical mole or skin cancer, Dr. Wilson will discuss the most effective treatment options. Many lesions can be excised in the office under local anesthesia. Others may be treated with cryotherapy or medication-based therapies.
For cancers in sensitive or cosmetically important areas (face, eyelids, nose, hands), Dr. Wilson often coordinates with a Mohs surgeon. After precise cancer removal, you will return to Lake Norman Plastic Surgery for Dr. Wilson to reconstruct the area and restore a natural, balanced appearance.

Prevention and Self-Monitoring

Protecting your skin between exams is essential. Dr. Wilson recommends:

  • Using daily sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
  • Avoiding peak sun exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM
  • Performing monthly self-skin checks
  • Scheduling annual professional skin exams

It’s important to stay vigilant, as it helps catch changes early and further supports your skin’s health.

What’s the First Step?

Your first step is to schedule a comprehensive screening at Lake Norman Plastic Surgery. During this appointment, Dr. Wilson will examine your skin, answer your questions, and advise whether observation, biopsy, or treatment is recommended. This proactive approach ensures you receive the proper care at the right time.

What to Expect During a Skin Cancer Screening

During your appointment, you will undergo a detailed full-body evaluation. The process is comfortable and typically takes just a few minutes. If a biopsy is needed, a small area will be numbed, and a tissue sample will be taken for analysis. Results usually return quickly, allowing us to guide you toward appropriate treatment or reassurance.
