Introduction to Motiva Implants

At Lake Norman Plastic Surgery, we offer several breast implant options so that implant selection can be tailored to each patient’s anatomy, tissue characteristics, and aesthetic goals. One of the newest options available in the United States is the Motiva® breast implant system.

Motiva SmoothSilk® Round and SmoothSilk® Round Ergonomix® silicone gel breast implants received FDA approval in 2024 for primary and revision breast augmentation in women age 22 and older. Motiva implants combine a highly controlled smooth surface with cohesive silicone gel and are available in designs intended to provide different combinations of softness, shape, projection, and movement.

For women considering breast augmentation in Charlotte and the Lake Norman area, Motiva provides another option for creating a result that complements the patient’s individual proportions rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Dr. Henry Wilson offers both Motiva and Mentor breast implants and helps each patient understand the differences so that implant selection can be individualized. Lake Norman Plastic Surgery welcomes patients from Huntersville and communities throughout the Lake Norman and greater Charlotte area, including Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, and Denver.

What Are Motiva Implants?

Dr. Wilson has more than 20 years of experience performing breast surgery and has worked extensively with the major breast implant systems, including Mentor and Allergan. This experience gives him a long-term perspective on implant design and how differences in implant dimensions, gel characteristics, surface technology, and form stability can affect implant selection and surgical results.

Following FDA approval of Motiva implants in the United States, Dr. Wilson added Motiva as another option for appropriately selected breast augmentation patients. Rather than viewing a newer implant technology in isolation, he evaluates it in the context of more than two decades of experience with established implant systems.

Dr. Wilson does not believe that one breast implant is universally best for every patient. Implant selection should take into account breast dimensions, existing breast tissue, skin quality, chest anatomy, desired size and shape, lifestyle, and the characteristics of the available implant systems.

Motiva’s SmoothSilk surface technology and the distinctive behavior of the Ergonomix implant make it an appealing option for some patients, particularly when a soft, natural appearance and movement are priorities.

What Are the Benefits of Motiva Implants?

  • Soft, cohesive silicone gel
  • Highly controlled SmoothSilk surface architecture
  • Multiple sizes and projections for individualized implant selection
  • Round and Ergonomix options with different gel and shape characteristics
  • Natural movement and softness, particularly with the Ergonomix design
  • Options for both subtle enhancement and greater breast fullness
  • FDA approval supported by clinical study data

The best implant is not determined by brand alone. Your anatomy, implant dimensions, surgical technique, and your goals all contribute to the final result.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Motiva Implants?

Motiva implants may be appropriate for women age 22 or older who are considering primary breast augmentation or revision augmentation and are in good general health with realistic expectations.

Patients seek breast augmentation for many reasons, including naturally small breast volume, volume loss after pregnancy or weight change, breast asymmetry, or simply a desire for different proportions.

Patients should be nonsmokers or willing to discontinue nicotine before and after surgery.

Some women also have breast skin laxity or significant nipple descent that cannot be corrected adequately with an implant alone. In those cases, Dr. Wilson may recommend combining augmentation with a breast lift.

Motiva vs Mentor: How do I Choose?

Both Motiva and Mentor manufacture FDA-approved silicone breast implants, and Dr. Wilson offers both systems. Neither brand is automatically the right choice for every patient.

Motiva is a newer option in the United States and offers distinctive SmoothSilk surface technology along with the Round Ergonomix implant, which is designed to change shape dynamically with body position.

Mentor has a long history of use in the United States and offers an extensive range of implant sizes, profiles, and gel characteristics through its MemoryGel® family. Dr. Wilson also brings more than 20 years of personal surgical experience using Mentor implants.

For some patients, the softness and dynamic characteristics of Motiva Ergonomix may be particularly attractive. For others, a particular Mentor implant dimension, projection, gel cohesivity, or degree of form stability may provide a better match.

Dr. Wilson’s goal is not to steer every patient toward one manufacturer. Instead, he considers your breast width, existing tissue, skin envelope, desired upper-pole fullness, preferred breast shape and size, and other anatomical factors before recommending an implant.

During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss and compare the available options and understand why a particular implant may be better suited to your goals.

What’s the First Step?

Your Motiva Implants Journey with Henry WIlson, MD

The first step is a private breast augmentation consultation at Lake Norman Plastic Surgery in Huntersville. Dr. Wilson will evaluate your breast and chest dimensions, existing breast tissue, skin quality, symmetry, and overall proportions. You will discuss the size and shape you hope to achieve as well as implant size, projection, gel characteristics, incision location, and implant pocket.Depending on your anatomy, implant placement may be subglandular, subfascial, dual-plane, or subpectoral. The objective is not simply to select an implant based on volume. Implant width, projection, tissue coverage, and the relationship between the implant and your natural breast are all important in producing a balanced result.

A physician, Dr. Henry Wilson, wearing a dark suit and yellow tie, shows a tablet to a seated female patient with long dark hair in an examination room. The tablet screen displays before-and-after photos of a woman's face. The patient is looking intently at the tablet. A framed certificate hangs on the wall behind the patient.

What to Expect on the Day of Motiva Implant Surgery

Breast augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia.

Before surgery, Dr. Wilson will confirm your surgical plan and make appropriate markings. Incisions are commonly placed in the breast crease, where scars generally can be concealed well.

A carefully planned implant pocket is created, and the selected implants are inserted and positioned to optimize symmetry and breast shape. The incisions are then closed, and you will recover under observation before returning home the same day.

Most straightforward breast augmentation procedures take approximately one to two hours, although operative time varies depending on the procedure.

Combine Motiva Implants with Other Procedures

Breast Lift

For patients with both volume loss and breast sagging, breast implants can be combined with a mastopexy, or breast lift.

The implant restores or adds volume, while the breast lift reshapes the breast, removes excess skin, and repositions the nipple and breast tissue. This can be particularly useful following pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or aging.

Dr. Wilson will determine whether augmentation alone or augmentation with a breast lift is more appropriate for your anatomy.

Body Contouring Procedures

Breast augmentation can also be combined with procedures such as liposuction or abdominoplasty for patients who wish to address multiple areas.

These combinations are individualized, and safety, anticipated operative time, recovery, and the extent of each procedure are considered when determining whether procedures should be performed together.

Motiva Implants Recovery

Most patients return home the day of surgery. Tightness, swelling, and soreness are common during the first several days and gradually improve.

Many patients can return to light work within approximately one week, depending on the physical demands of their job. Exercise, heavy lifting, and more strenuous activity are resumed gradually as healing progresses and Dr. Wilson clears you for additional activity.

Breast implants initially may sit higher or feel firmer than their eventual position. The breasts typically soften and the implants settle progressively over the following weeks to months.

Follow-up visits allow Dr. Wilson and our team to monitor your recovery and answer questions as healing progresses.

How Much Do Motiva Implants Cost in Charlotte, NC?

The cost of breast augmentation with Motiva implants depends on the implant selection, complexity of the procedure, surgeon’s fee, anesthesia and facility costs, and whether another procedure such as a breast lift is performed at the same time.

Because each surgical plan is individualized, a consultation is the best way to receive accurate pricing.

Lake Norman Plastic Surgery reviews the anticipated costs with you before surgery. Financing options may also be available for qualified patients.
